My Favorite Louisiana Christmas Traditions

🎄 My Favorite Louisiana Christmas Traditions

The holidays in Louisiana are unlike anywhere else in the world. We might not have snow, but we’ve got something even better — food, music, lights, and traditions that are uniquely ours. Whenever I think about Christmas here, I’m instantly reminded of the little things that make Louisiana holidays magical.

✨ Christmas Lights & Fireworks in Louisiana

One of my favorite traditions is driving through neighborhoods to see houses decorated with twinkling lights. When I was little, my dad and his brother would load us all up in my uncle's minivan, and we’d drive around looking at houses, laughing and joking the whole way.

I also grew up in Natchitoches, Louisiana — the City of Lights — so Christmas lights will always be top on my list. The fireworks over Cane River, the festival food, and the glow of thousands of bulbs are forever tied to my idea of Christmas magic.

🍲 Food as a Louisiana Christmas Love Language

Louisiana is well known for its food, and during the holidays, it’s even more important. That’s why so much of my artwork centers around Louisiana food traditions — because food is truly a love language for Louisiana families, mine included.

In my family, gumbo is a must at Christmas. My dad always made it, and that tradition helped spark the story of Roux-Dolph the Gumbo Pot. I wanted to give the tradition of Christmas gumbo an extra-special story that families could share year after year.

🎁 The Magic of Christmas Gifts

Gifts were always extra special in my family. As a child, we got to open one present on Christmas Eve — but we could hardly wait until morning to see what Santa had brought!

Now, my kids carry on their own tradition. They get to open a Christmas Box on Christmas Eve, a tradition passed down from my husband’s side of the family. Seeing their excitement reminds me how meaningful thoughtful gifts can be. That’s why I feel so blessed to create art and gifts that help others feel that same magic of being seen, loved, and remembered.

🌟 Other Louisiana Traditions We Love

Some of my other favorite traditions include:

  • Backyard bonfires 🔥

  • Our annual Christmas hike 🚶

  • Holiday baking 🍪 (because cookies taste better at Christmas, right?).

Louisiana Christmas traditions may look a little different from family to family, but the heart of them is always the same: food, laughter, light, and love.

When I think back on these memories, I realize that traditions are the true gifts of the season. They’re what tie us together and remind us of home. My hope is that the art I create — from towels and mugs to my book, The Legend of Roux-Dolph the Gumbo Pot — brings a little bit of Louisiana holiday spirit into your home too.
