Where My Cajun Christmas Ideas Come From
When people see Roux-Dolph and my Cajun Christmas collection, the first question they usually ask is: “Where do you come up with this stuff?”
That inspiration doesn’t usually show up when I’m sitting at my desk with a blank page. It comes when I think about growing up in Louisiana — trips to Houma for Mardi Gras, swamp tours, visits to New Orleans, and time spent with family scattered across the state. Those memories fuel the Cajun holiday décor and Louisiana Christmas gifts I create today.

If you’ve looked at my designs, you already know that gumbo, crawfish, and even boudin aren’t just recipes around here — they’re family traditions. They’re stories told around the table. That’s why they keep showing up in my art. Gumbo has always been a comfort food in my home, especially at Christmas. My dad was always in charge of making the gumbo, and it was always good. I want families to sit down with their own Christmas gumbo and feel just a little more of that Louisiana holiday magic.

Growing up, I noticed that Louisiana had its own way of celebrating the holidays. We might not have snow, but we’ve got twinkling lights on oak trees, neighborhoods lit up with boat parades, and Santas who look just as at home in shrimp boots as they do in shiny black ones. Those details make their way into my work, because I want people to smile and say, “That feels like home.” It’s the same feeling I hope my Cajun Christmas ornaments and festive Louisiana-inspired gifts bring to others.
Some of my favorite designs come from asking: “What if…?” What if a crawfish became a Christmas tree? What if a gumbo pot saved Christmas? "What if we decked the halls with balls of boudin?" It’s silly, but that’s the fun of it. Holiday traditions don’t have to be stiff or serious — they can be playful, colorful, and full of humor. That’s why I love creating unique Cajun gifts that make people laugh as much as they make them smile.
Once an idea grabs me, it usually starts as a doodle in a sketchbook. From there, I’ll play with watercolor, ink, or digital tools until the character has the right mix of warmth, whimsy, and Louisiana flair. Each design is my way of bottling up a little joy and sending it out into the world.
At the end of the day, my inspiration comes down to this: I want people to laugh, to feel connected, and to see a little bit of themselves (and Louisiana) in my work. Roux-Dolph and friends are my love letter to the holidays — with a Cajun twist.
